Wild Wisdom: A Literary Adventure Inspired by My Side of the Mountain

Step into the wilderness with Sam Gribley as our guide! This 8-week interdisciplinary unit draws from Jean Craighead George’s My Side of the Mountain to explore themes of independence, survival, and nature connection. Through hands-on projects, field experiences, and creative reflection, students build real-world skills while walking in the footsteps of the story’s unforgettable young adventurer.

Week 1: And the Story Begins
We launch our journey by meeting author Jean Craighead George and creating Paper Bag Journals for reflections. Students also map their world and make notching sticks to track time, just like Sam.

Week 2: Local Species Identification
Backpacks on! We hit the trail for an identification hike and learn the art of fly tying, tuning into the local flora and fauna that surround us.

Week 3: Falconry
Exploring the ancient art of falconry, students discover the many uses of feathers, practice basket weaving, and string together popcorn and berries—natural skills with historical roots.

Week 4: Ethical Hunting
This week brings thoughtful conversations on responsible resource use. Students learn to identify deer, read animal tracks, and safely practice archery.

Week 5: Hospitality in the Wild
Students explore what it means to be a good host in the wilderness, learning faux tanning techniques and engaging in etiquette-based activities with an outdoorsy twist.

Week 6: Food Preservation
From dehydrating fruit to purifying water, this week focuses on how to prepare and preserve food in the wild—key survival skills brought to life through hands-on experience.

Week 7: Communication
Inspired by Sam’s written reflections, students draft newspaper articles and cook acorn pancakes, tying storytelling to sustenance.

Week 8: The Life of Adventure
Our final week culminates in classic wilderness skills: fire-starting and a celebratory open-fire feast to honor all we’ve learned and experienced together.
