Exploring Ancient Alexandria: A Journey Through History, Science, and Culture

This eight-week unit took students on an unforgettable adventure through the intellectual, artistic, and cultural wonders of Alexandria and beyond. Rooted in history and enriched by hands-on learning, each week offered a deep dive into a unique theme:

 

Week 1: History of Discovery and Anthropology
Students explored the far-reaching influence of Alexander the Great and the legacy of the Library of Alexandria, discovering how ancient knowledge shaped the world.

 

Week 2: Natural Science
A study of the date palm and desert ecosystems introduced learners to the natural resilience of life in arid climates, blending botany with environmental science.

 

Week 3: Invention
Students marveled at ancient innovation through Heron of Alexandria’s early engineering feats—including the steam engine and water fountain—building their own models to understand mechanics and motion.

 

Week 4: Wonders of the Medieval World
A fascinating look at the Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa and Egyptian mummification practices offered a window into ancient burial rituals and archaeological mysteries.

 

Week 5: The Arts
Learners created their own papyrus-style paper while studying the role of art and record-keeping in early civilizations.

 

Week 6: Language Arts
A hands-on exploration of hieroglyphics brought ancient language to life, allowing students to decode messages and write their own names using symbolic scripts.

 

Week 7: Cuisine
Culture came alive through the tastes and traditions of Egypt. Students learned about Ramadan and Iftar, sampling and preparing traditional Egyptian dishes.

 

Week 8: Wonders of the Ancient World
The unit culminated with a look at the Lighthouse of Alexandria—one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World—exploring ancient architecture and maritime history.

 

From ancient texts to traditional feasts, this unit wove together storytelling, science, art, and culture in a way that honored the enduring legacy of Alexandria and inspired a new generation of curious thinkers.
