BASE CAMP'S BEGINNINGS

"An environment-based education movement--at all levels of education--will help students realize that school isn't supposed to be a polite form of incarceration, but a portal to the wider world." - Richard Luv

In 2017, through an incredible series of events, and as the hopes and dreams of two families began to weave together, Outsiders Adventure Community "Base Camp" was born in Bakersfield, California.   Those hopes and dreams grew roots (9 acre roots to be exact) and we had no idea that these dreams were the very same of many others.  This gathering of parents, children, mentors, teachers, and families all with the same desire.

Community.

But not just any community.

We are a community dedicated to foster a love for learning and make education a way of life.

Using a custom, environment based curriculum and creating once in a lifetime experiences, Outsiders Adventure Community grew in just one year to over 200 students and 16 of the most amazing, hand-picked staff members. The curriculum grew legs and this became a space where we don't just learn about levers, we build them as teeter totters, sling shots, and catapults. The Swiss Family Robinson's raft became a reality as students gathered into integrated teams, older students helping the littles and the littles looking to their "mentors" in wonder as they designed, built, and painted their own rafts to float the river for our annual family regatta!

We are so proud to know that when friends and families come to Base Camp, they are seeing the hard work of many Outsiders children!

We didn't just want to provide a place for epic adventures here at Outsiders, we wanted our children to play a huge part in in what this place would become.  Students designed and constructed several outdoor classrooms, painted mural walls, built playgrounds and chicken coops.  Dads have come to the rescue with electricity and projects, mamas have provided popsicles, held little hands and assisted class times.  Through trial and error we have, TOGETHER, made something amazing out of this forgotten, overgrown, and dilapidated 9 acres of the world. And it continues to transform before our eyes.

There is a pride and a sense of ownership that comes with this truth.
This...the heart of Outsiders, it belongs to THEM. To US.

IN IT TOGETHER.
