Description

Archimedes Unboxed: Invent Like a Genius

Dive into the world of ancient innovation with this 8-week unit inspired by one of history’s greatest thinkers—Archimedes! From levers and pulleys to solar science and Rube Goldberg machines, students become inventors, problem-solvers, and engineers as they explore the science, math, and creativity behind Archimedes’ legacy.

Week 1: Archimedes in History

We set the stage with stories of invention and discovery—learning about patents, trademarks, and the journey from idea to impact. Students begin thinking like inventors themselves.

Week 2: Give It a Pull

Pulleys take the spotlight! Students build and test simple pulley systems to understand how mechanical advantage helps us lift and move heavy loads.

Week 3: Don’t Be a Square… Be a Cube!

Exploring 3D geometry through hands-on construction, students work with cubes and other shapes to uncover the beauty of structure and symmetry.

Week 4: Here Comes the Sun

Harnessing the power of the sun, students build solar ovens and dive into experiments that show just how powerful sunlight can be.

Week 5: Go Mobile

Using balance and design, students create mobiles and experiment with center of gravity—combining art, physics, and fun.

Week 6: This Means War

From catapults to conundrums, we explore machines of war and ancient defense strategies—culminating in a team-based escape room challenge full of number puzzles and clever thinking.

Week 7: It’s Within Your Grasp

Students construct their own Iron Claw to explore grip strength, mechanical reach, and how tools help extend human ability.

Week 8: And That’s a Wrap

In our inventive grand finale, students collaborate on a Rube Goldberg machine—linking all they’ve learned into one brilliant chain reaction of creativity and problem-solving.
